The Original OneDerBrew Brewing Beer Making 101
Here is a little primer on home brewing. Currently, people brew beer on the stove (boil for a long time to get the hops in the beer) then chill it to cool to 75-80 degrees. The process goes something like this:- Boil the water
- Put in the hops
- Chill the beer (let it set overnight). Don't disturb the beer until it is cool. Oxygenation causes a bad taste (so let it set over night).
- Shake or stirr the beer to oxygenate it. Simply put the beer into a carboy and shake it up.
- Put the Yeast in the beer.
- Leave an opening so the yeast can get air so it can multiply. The yeast creates water and CO2.
- When the oxygen is used up. the yeast produces co2 and alcohlhol. so, you close it up for 5 days or so. Once you use up all the sugar, the yeast goes into hypernation.
- Next you sift it in to another bucket and let it set for another week.
- Then they put a little suger into each bottle (normally 200) and they fill the bottle, sealing it to finish.
- The bottles sit seald for another 3 weeks on average.
- When the fermenting process is done, simply drain off the yeast and enjoy your new brew!
- The spicket is a 3/4 NPT fitting so you can modify it to the configuration that you prefer if you don't like ours.
- You brew the beer
- Chill it and put it in the bucket.
- Shake or stirr the beer to oxygenate it. Simply put the beer into a carboy and shake it up.
- Put the Yeast in the beer.
- Assemble the cone to the bucket and clamp. Put the gasket in place (double O ring) on the bucket. The lip goes into the groove and then you put on the ring and bolt it down. Once it's all together, just flip it over and stand it up. If the pressure goes above 30 psi the gasket will relieve the pressure. In case of an over-pressure condition, a second bucket is added for safety.
- After 4 days, pull the yeast out of the container (by using the cone) - just like the professionals.
- Carbonation takes 5 to 7 days. Once the beer is carbonated, you can just pull it off and put the beer into the refrigerator!
Here's a trick: If you do an all extract beer, (not using any all-grain) use crystal malt to add a lot of body and unfermented sugar to beer and that inproves the taste. If you use the hop extract, you can add more later to increase the bitters of the beer. The OneDerBrew Beer Lab lets you do this while it is still in the tank!
